The Escazú Agreement was ratified by Mexico and its entry into force is imminent Monday November 9th, 2020
The Global Call for Action against Poverty (GCAP) celebrates this decisive step for the entry into force and for its implementation in the region.
On November 5, 2020, Mexico ratified the Escazú Agreement, becoming the 11th country to do so. This fact sends a strong message of hope to all of Latin America and the Caribbean, taking significant steps to advance democracy and environmental governance in the region.
The Escazú Agreement establishes that it will enter into force when 11 countries ratify it. Argentina was the most recent country and now with Mexico’s ratification, the threshold has been reached and, both countries need prepare the institutional implementation at the UN headquarters for the ratification to be officially recognized.
We make an URGENT call to the countries that have not yet ratified the Escazú Agreement or those who have not signed the treaty. The region needs a robust instrument that guarantees human rights and protect the environment, an instrument that takes care of natural common goods and protects defenders of the environment and the planet.
