CSOs’ Spotlight Report and Children Status Report launched

The NGO Federation of Nepal (GCAP Nepal) convened the National People’s Assembly on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on 15 September 2024 in Kathmandu ahead of the Summit of the Future. Two reports – the Civil Society Spotlight Report and the Children Status Report on SDGs – were launched during the event.

These reports, crafted in partnership with key thematic groups within the Nepal SDGs Forum, present insights into Nepal’s progress and remaining challenges in meeting the SDGs.

Mr. Arjun Bhattarai, Secretary General of NGO Federation of Nepal (NFN) and the Team Leader of the Spotlight Report, presented the primary findings, highlighting areas of concern and opportunities for improvement. The report provided Nepal’s civil society and government with a comprehensive overview as they prepare for the UN Summit of the Future on September 22-23.

Chief guest Mr. Rojnath Pandey, Secretary of the National Assembly Secretariat, underscored the critical role of civil society in the SDG framework. “Civil society’s research and spotlighting efforts are invaluable for the government, especially in areas lacking data and focus,” Mr. Pandey noted, emphasizing how collaboration can bridge gaps in achieving the SDGs.

Chaired by Mr. Ram Prasad Subedi, President of NFN, the assembly hosted several distinguished CSO leaders: Mr. SP Kalaunee, Chairperson of the Association of International NGOs in Nepal (AIN); Mr. J.B. Biswokarma, President of the Dalit NGO Federation; Ms. Krishna Kumari Waiba, Chairperson of the Beyond Beijing Committee (BBC); Ms. Benu Maya Gurung from the Alliance against Trafficking in Women and Children in Nepal (AATWIN); and Ms. Meena Sharma from CZOP.

The event commenced with opening remarks by Ms. Bhawana Bhatta, Vice-President of NFN, setting the tone for a series of seven presentations and knowledge-sharing sessions led by the Nepal SDGs Forum’s key thematic groups.

The sessions featured in-depth discussions on the challenges Nepal faces in its SDG journey, from political instability to data gaps. CSO representatives underscored the importance of crafting a six-year roadmap that prioritizes inclusion, intersectionality, and the needs of marginalized communities.

The event was organized in collaboration with Action4Sustainable Development (A4SD), the European Union (EU), Forus, VSO and World Vision International Nepal.
