The Global Call to Against Poverty (GCAP) strongly condemns the attack on 3 January 2026 by the United States of America against Venezuela. This military action constitutes a serious violation of international law and the United Nations Charter – especially the purposes and principles in Chapter I, Articles 1 and 2 based on respect, peace and equality between the nations, including Venezuela’s sovereignty.

There is no reason that justifies this attack, which constitutes – including the expressed intention to control Venezuela –  a clear form of imperialism and creates a very dangerous situation for peace and security in the Latin American and Caribbean region and throughout the world.

If the arbitrariness of the strongest prevails, international law will be under peril. We are very concerned that this will have a negative impact not only on smaller states, but also on human rights, and that it will cause further suffering to the people in Venezuela and beyond.

As a first step, further deaths and attacks on civil society must be prevented. The situation in Venezuela must be resolved solely by peaceful means and without external interference. Only an inclusive democratic process by the Venezuelan people can achieve a sustainable solution and respect for human rights.

The sovereignty of peoples and respect for international law are the foundations of any lasting peace. It is therefore urgent and important that the international community protects international law and sends a clear message to the Government of the United States that the world does not accept this attack on an independent country.

We call for a clear condemnation of the attacks by the United Nations and the entire international community, including from allies of the USA. They cannot remain lukewarm or neutral in the hope of receiving better treatment from the Trump administration.

When international law is trampled upon, it is the people who pay the price. GCAP calls for  international solidarity and respect for the sovereignty and dignity that are essential to the Venezuelan people.      .

GCAP stands in solidarity with the Venezuelan civil society, social movements, and communities, people in their struggle for democracy, economic and social justice, human rights, and an open civic space.
