The policy paper “The impact of climate crisis on the movement of populations” focuses on climate crisis and its consequences, especially on the lives of the most vulnerable people, who many times are forced to move either in the interior of several countries (internally displaced populations) or between different countries in order to make a living.

Extreme weather events such as flooding, droughts and wildfires, as well as global warming brings on poorer crops and a higher production cost for farmers, which many times leads to poverty. Climate crisis deepens the existing inequalities and create unequal distribution of global wealth, making the movement of populations inevitable.

Immediate action is needed, with measures for the limitation of global warming and responsibilities taken by the richer countries which contribute the most to it. The transformation of the current production and consumption model is necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and stabilize warming at a level below 2°C

This policy summary presents some of the key discussion points on climate migration, formulating at the same time policy recommendations towards fulfilling the commitments of the international community and the European Union.

Based on the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on the subject: «Climate Change, Desertification, Land Degradation, Sustainable Land Management, Food Security, and Greenhouse Gas Fluxes in Terrestrial Ecosystems», the planet is heading for a rise of global average temperature far beyond 2°C above pre-industrial levels, while the intensification of weather and other events may lead to increased displacement, disrupted food chains, threatened livelihoods and exacerbated stresses for conflict.

The response to the climate crisis can only be climate justice, an assumption of responsibility by the more powerful and substantially supporting vulnerable groups at all levels.
